Indeed is no more news that the iPhone 7 is a water resistant,
but this doesn’t change anything about the way you should handle the
device, with Apple itself recommending customers to always avoid
exposing the device to liquids despite the IP67 rating. What’s more interesting is that the company recommends waiting
for at least
5 hours before charging an iPhone that has been exposed to water
because otherwise the device could be completely damaged. And it goes
without saying that warranty won’t cover this damage because you’re not
supposed to expose the iPhone 7 to water in the first place.
“If your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus has been exposed
to liquid, unplug all cables and do not charge your device until it’s
completely dry. Using accessories or charging when wet might damage your
iPhone. Allow at least five hours before charging or connecting a
Lightning accessory,” Apple says in the official documentation for the iPhone 7.
Avoid submerging the phone in water
As we told you only a few hours ago, the iPhone 7 survived like a champ in an underwater test,
managing to even beat the Samsung Galaxy S7, but Apple says that
“liquid damage is not covered under warranty” and you could cause it by
“intentionally submerging iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus in water.”
In other words, if you ever wanted to take some
underwater pics with the iPhone, this is not a good time despite the
IP67 rating of the new model. The risk of water damage still exists, and
Apple says it even increases as a result of normal wear. In other
words, the older the iPhone 7, the bigger the chances to have it damaged
when thrown in the water.
In the end, water resistance is one of the features
that you shouldn’t intentionally test anyway, but it’s good it’s there
just in case an accident happens. And by the way, the warranty doesn’t cover liquid damage if you use the iPhone 7 in a sauna. Tough luck.
